Material and Method: skype group,

Really well said. A couple of my thoughts regarding pathology application:
Before start application,---what's your "selling point" ?
For instance, do you have high USMLE scores? Do you graduate from "big name
schools or research groups" ? are you doing some fashion pathology related
research? Do you have publications with high quality o quantity? Are you
studying some unique diseases or using special pathology related methods /
protocols? Do you have a lot of clinical experience ? Are you really "good
looking"? Or" bad looking "? Find your"uniqueness", expand it with specific
examples or numbers. This can be used in your PS and more importantly you
need this to impress your interviewer and stand out among all interviewees
during all the whole interviews.
Next, why pathology ? Everybody says that he really loves pathology, why
should believe your story ? Of course, this is a tricky question, which
however you will be asked for sure. Again, It 's related to your "own
experience" and it definitely does not have a standard answer. However, at
least you need to know something about pathology before you " really love
path ", right? A short term OB may be good enough, a lengthy clinical path
in China is great; A translational research or cooperation with pathologist
at least can tell you something about pathology; Or maybe you or your friend
used to benefit from some pathologist's outstanding work...... Before you
make your answer, chat with 5 different people and ask how they feel your
passion.
Then, why this specific program? We all know we have to apply more than 50
PGs to secure a position and we DO have specific reasons to apply for most
programs. Because, there must be something in common between you and PG, so
let's find it. Do you or your recommenders happen to know someone in this PG
? Do you have interest in the fellowship in this PG ? Have you used to be in
this city? Do you like the sports/ weather here ? You know they are doing
something great, actually you are planning to learn this new stuff? ....
Before you make your answer, ask 5 different persons about this program,
they may offer you something more interesting.
Be prepared, be strong, wish the best. Just do not give up.

子,可见they have happy residents that are willing to share.
pg还有一位年轻attending(Cytopath)参与,而且当天参加面试。

1st Pathology IV: BHS
community pathologists为目标;
friendly;
3).PG里的resident有一些特殊福利如就餐等;
4).提供免费住宿,所提供的hotel不错;
2. Interview

UAMS(LR, Arkansas):
This is a new IMG-friendly pg that I strongly recommend to everyone. As they
changed a new PD, who came from Lebanon, 3yrs ago, and since then, they are
recruiting increasing amount of IMG residents (before that only AMG
graduated from Central US med school were occupying all the positions). They
would even recruit one IMG resident who graduate >10yrs annually, although
they definitely prefer young graduates. So whatever conditions you are,
consider this pg.
I love this pg. They are very friendly and generous. The friendliest IM pg
to me was Rochester General. Both of the pg offer pre-iv dinner, free hotel,
and provided transportation throughout the iv day. UAMS even ask their
residents to drive the candidates to the dinner& airport, to offer the
candidates more time to chat with residents. You can imagine how nice and
friendly they were. One extra thing, the free hotel is the best hotel I have
ever lived~~a huge suite, which distracted me a lot from iv preparation~~
On the iv day, they asked 10 candidates with lower frequency to host iv,
which is quite efficient. We initially gathered in the department library,
and we were given the opportunity to talk with the faculty and residents
freely. Since I was quite familiar with my interviewer’s info, I happen to
talk with one new faculty, who graduated from India and did residency in
this pg, and published 7 papers during his PGY-3&4. I asked him how could he
be so productive and energetic, and he happily talked with me, which
continued till our interview.
After morning report, we enjoyed a long hospital trip. Their department
environment is the best one I have ever known, quite neat and tidy, fully-
equipped, huge space. They held the iv in the same way as CS exam (actually
in the med school CS exam rooms~~), the difference was that we candidates
stayed in the same room while interviewers took turns to interview us. Very
effective.
I interviewed with 6 interviewers.
1st interviewer was an CMG physician from VA hospital. I heard from my
study partner that he was not involved in any iv this yr, so it is one way
to show the pg’s friendliness. He was very nice to introduce their pg to me
; also shared with me how to make J1 waiver. He even asked me some pathology
questions, which was not that horrible to me. Finally, he strongly
recommended me to rank their pg high. He sent me a long reply to my Thank
You Note, which gave me lots of encouragement. Although I did not get any
chance to talk with him any more, I intrinsically thank him for his support
and encouragement.
2nd interviewer was a professor& Director of Molecular path. He became very
interested when I asked him questions about molecular path (MM study), how
to control a clinical lab. From him, I learned how to do lab management,
which becomes a heated point in CP RISE exams. Our conversation ended
quickly through my questions and his sharing.
3rd interviewer was a nice lady. She is a new faculty who graduated from
hematopath in the pg. She introduced hematopath training to me. She also
told me a tip: all the cards sent to interviewers would be collected and put
in my profile~~so nice to have her as an interviewer
We had lunch in a median-sized meeting room. I talked with some candidates,
and some senior residents. The most fortunate thing was that a new faculty
who did his residency& fellowship@ CCF, shared with me his experience@ CCF,
and how did he get his current job. He got some funding, and was doing
exactly the same lab work that I have been doing in the past few years.
Although he was not my interviewer, I became very excited about the
potential opportunity here.
4th interviewer: resuming the conversation with the Indian faculty. He told
me to be open-minded during pathology training& making plans; also looking
for a career that is new& could be the direction for pathology. As to renal
pathology, he taught me to get clinical experience, so I can have an idea of
how to make step-by-step Dx. I was highly inspired by this interviewer
throughout the day. I wonder if everyone can be so energetic and creative as
he does, how can it be so difficulty for pathology graduates to find a job?
Well, it’s only my guessing~~
5th interviewer was the chief resident, who had been in Arkansas, or
probably this pg for >10yr. She gave my detailed introduction of the pg to
me, and answered every question efficiently. I like her~~
6th interview was PD. He would make the most important decision. I heard he
is very strict with spoken English, which distracted me from iv preparation
beforehand. He actually was a nice person. He told me, every candidate in
his pg reached the requirement of being smart and working hard. So what he
really cared during iv was whether the candidate has a good personality (
good communication skills& good English, in my opinion). He gave me the info
about the pg from a generous perspective: such as the didactic, fellowship,
et al. Not a lot of chemistry, but I don’t think my English failed me.
Pg advantage:
1. Very supportive hospital environment; friendly & generous program;
Excellent faculty group, very energetic and passionate, with experience both
in clinic & research, open-minded
2. Hospital is famous for MM (Multiple myeloma clinic), so their
hemotopath is very strong; Balanced AP/CP training. Resident graduate go to
diverse fellowship specialties.
3. Lots of fellowship positions (currently 5 specialties, and gonna open
3 more)
4. Little Rock is a nice place, with warm winter & humid summer, weather
is similar to Shanghai/Zhejiang; good church; Good Chinese restaurant;
people are warm-hearted
5. Median-large pg, with total 20 slots. 5 positions annually.
6. Excellent didactic: they host daily seminars, which require everyone
to attend. The topics are divided according to systems monthly.
Pg shortcoming:
1. No CMG resident before. Central US hospitals are famous for their
conservative. Even offered iv, the likelihood to get matched is uncertain
at the moment.
2. South people are very lay-back; but physicians are effective
3. Small city& state, not sure about future development~~~
4. They do not offer H1B this year
5. Their website was outdated~~

UH (Honolulu, HI):
I deliberately arranged UH iv as my last one, and it did not fail me. I know
it could be the only place to heal all the stress generated from interview
trips, and the suffering from a long-term pressure. Beach and sunshine have
always kept their charming attraction to me. As one interviewer mentioned:
How
do u deal with stress can determine whether you will choose here or not. If
you would like to drive wildly throughout 5 states, or go shopping for a
whole day, then it is not the right place for you; but if walking around the
seashore in a sunny afternoon, then it is the perfect choice. I had no
doubt to answer this question.
They do not provide hotel, cause they know interviewers would prefer to stay
there longer than the iv day. As Lenny recommended, I asked program to
refer me to University of Hawaii student Dorms, very cheap $28/day single
room, $35/day double room. Also bus there is very convenient. I only stayed
there for 4d, and on my last day, I rent a car, drove around the island, and
enjoyed different types of beaches.
There seemed to be no CMG either as committee member or resident. But they
have high ratio of Asian staffs, mostly grew up in HI, attended med school
in UH, and practiced in HI. I have one thought: because it is such nice
weather here throughout the year, those who have lived &worked here for >
4yrs cannot get used to the bad weather outside the island; so the only
choice for them was to stay here all their life. One thing seems to be
certain, they offer iv to young graduate (<5yr?)
Their pg was quite friendly. I was the only one to be interviewed that day.
A PGY-4 resident who matched to Memorial Sloan-Kettering picked me up from
the dormitory with his shining convertible, and took me around 3 different
hospitals to have the iv. It was the only iv that provided the opportunity
to see all the rotating hospitals. The resident kept on offering the info
about their pg, and the word he used the most to describe their faculty was
“lay-back”. It was my first time to realize this word could enjoy positive
meanings. I had iv with 5 interviewers. PD was not quite talkative, but
from the resident, I know he is very nice person, and very helpful to
residents. The new Chair held the iv with me on the top of the hospital,
under the sunshine; He knew my current pg very well, so our iv was like a
conversation sharing the past and future; He gave me some recommendation to
my research project; He went to northeast China many times to attend
orthopedic international annual meetings, so he could say some Chinese words
. Finally, he taught me how to choose a residency pg: to see whether their
resident are happy. I learned a lot from this distinguished yet kind
pathologist. I also
talked with CP director, Medical Education director, and Ob/Gyn path
director. Only the Ob/Gyn pathologist gave me a 4-question list as a start
of our iv, which were quite difficult. But no worry, he just wanted to
initiate the conversation, and learn about our professionalism& personality;
he won’t give you a difficult time.
Residents in the pg are quite happy and friendly. Housing& gas there is a
bit expensive, but living expense is not as high as I expected. They have 2
big mall, a good Chinatown, and all kinds of Asian food.
Advantage:
1. Friendly pg
2. Great environment to live in Hawaii!!! Love the seashore and the
weather so much!!!
3. Good clinical training. On-call every other day, 2 presentations /3mo.
4. Opportunity to participate in teaching
5. Need to do at least one translation research project during training
6. New Chair is so friendly! He just came to Hawaii last year, who had
been the chair in Mt. Sinai for 10+yrs.
Shortcoming:
1. Typical community affiliated to University; No research opportunity
2. No fellowship offered at the moment
3. Isolated island, with cockroaches everywhere

3. St. John: community hospital。

UoM:
(PD,Chairman and 3 faculty)

ECU:
(3 faculty)

University at Buffalo
UB is extremely CMG friendly, most of residents are CMGs. Program is not in
the best tier but training is pretty sound. A lot of training will be done
in Roswell Park cancer center, which in fact more famous than the main
teaching hospital-Buffalo general hospital. The chair was from U Penn and
very famous in the field.
Please just book the hotel the program suggested. They have shuttles for you
from airport and to the hospital. $75 for a huge suite, very nice free
breakfast.
I met 5 interviewers including one Chinese faculty. Two senior female
faculties were very nice and both mainly talked about the shining points in
my CV. For example, one started the conversion with ‘I noticed you had
worked in a homeless shelter for a long time, why did you do that?’. The
surgical path head is from Roswell Park and looked very cool at first. But
that is his personality; he was actually very friendly and did not challenge
me anything. He grew up in Buffalo area, did medical school and residency
somewhere else and came back to work at UB. He shared me a lot about what
fun things you can do in Buffalo.
If there is one thing I can tell you about my UB interview, it would this:
the interview style of PD is very unique!!! She seemed very friendly at the
meeting before the interview starts but very challenging when you interview
with her. She did not talk to me much but just scrutinized my application
and pointed out all the potential drawbacks. We were not having a
conversation, instead, there were just questions and you just gave back your
answers to her. She may ask you about your gap, low scores, test attempts,
lack of clinical experience, too few papers, and application to other
specialty, etc. You have better to prepare well for these challenges.
Finally, she asked me if I have any questions or anything else to say. At
this point, you should not say ‘NO’ although she told us it is OK to say
‘NO’ at the meeting. I told her that although my application may not look
perfect on papers but I really love pathology and are very passionate about
it. Please be aware of PD’s interview style, otherwise, you may feel very
frustrated.
Another thing very unique for UB program is that they actually score you
right after the interviews and decide your position within all applicants of
that day when you are having lunch in another room. So, basically the
ranking has been decided at that day. Only the Chinese faculty answered my
thank-you email and PD did not reply my ranking email either. I received
positive answers from other PDs but they in fact did not take me. I finally
matched to UB. So, do not put too much on anything PD says in email.

1.tell me about your self
2. why pathology,
3. why our program
4.strengthen and weakness
candidate.
你回答: very good!

了该问“do you have any questions?”,问了个不该问的问题,我说昨天在楼下开始
的标准来设计的,人家的理念是希望病人“come here to heal, not come to here to
feel sick”。

I had a very pleasant interview in ECU pathology too. I agree with HoneyAB,
that the new PC is very charming and warm. She is the kind of person you
want to talk to whenever possible. She's from Oklahoma and moved to
Greenville, North Carolina with her family. She obviously enjoys
the new place, her work and role in the pathology department. This makes me
think that Greenville, NC must be a cool place to live and raise family,
and the department has a very collegial and relax environment.
There is one way to reach Greenville, by a small propeller aircraft from
charlotte, NC, perhaps 5-6 times per day. This reminds me of the deadly
propeller crash in a pacific island several years ago. However, unlike the
pacific island, Greenville lies within plains of tobacco and wheat fields.
"We have everything in Greenville. You can eat and go shopping in all kinds.
But,we have only one in every kind, one in every kind" said Dr.William R.
Oliver, one of prominent forensic pathologists in north Carolina.
One of the unique features in ECU interview is their group interview. When
the day started, we sit in the front of a conference room, facing all
department faculties, residents and staffs. We spoke about ourself and
then they asked questions to each of us. After that, we met with three
faculty members individually. There was a seminar during the lunch time,
given by a radiation oncologist from the UNC on non-small cell lung cancer
treatment, then followed by a consensus sign-out. Before we left, we had a
group interview with the chair and the program director, Dr. Peter J. Kragel
. I feel that he is fairly nice and gentle. He asked each one of us
questions, common questions in general. At the last, he asked us, "How do
you think the seminar ?" Well, nobody answered, so I spoke about the good
part and insufficiencies of the talk. Dr. Kragel gave a supportive and
informative response to my comments. We were then sent back to the hotel
prepaid by the hospital.
"Together We Are Better", says the motto of ECU Brody School of Medicine.
