Cover以小部分他讲的精华。另外,As always, 非常感谢版主和各位Volunteer的辛勤

Based on the experience of many CMGs, modified real cases.
Tips: Respect consultant’s opinions, but you are the person who makes
decisions and lives the outcome of the decision; consultant opinions reflect
their own residency application, but you need your own judgment.
Before the interview: 1. Why do you need more interviews? A.You have more
leverage to bargain B. you have more choices C. you will be more likely to
match: programs may regard you more competitive, you will be more confident
and relaxing, you can practice and get better.
Your job:
Decide what programs, What specialties: separate packages ,Apply early;
Apply more; Prepare strong application package;Unconventional ways to get
interviews; Do not pick up phone calls unless you are well prepared
LORs :
Need at least 3 letters
At least 2 should be in your specialty
More valuable if from training programs
Solicit letters early while they remember you
Preferable from physicians in the US
No grammar error
Who should you ask?
How well do they know you?
How well are they known?
PD/chairman/research director
Unconventional ways to get interviews:
Find ways to bypass” filtering”
Via connections: anybody that can talk to PC or PD
Ask recommends to ask for IV for you
Directly contact people that may have influence on resident selection: chair
, PD, famous faulty in the program, chief resident, mail (include Cover
letter, CV, need their signature) vs email, timing: after IV, invitation was
sent out and in Dec/Jan (because somebody canceled their slot)
Candidates programs like:
Able to fulfill clinical duties
Can I work with you? (Can you have a reasonable conversion?)
Adequate spoken English: speak slowly, practice, practice, practice
Adequate communication skills: look into eyes, listen, ask to repeat if you
do not understand, answer Qs to the point, concise
Adequate clinical skills (after short training)
Energetic: open your eyes, look into eyes, smile, and ask questions
Good personality: smile, offer help
Interested in their Program: do homework, ask appropriate questions, and ask
for Pre-match
Potentials
Do I want to work with you? (Can you have an enjoyable conversation?)
Career goals, insightful, research background, Fun: common interest.
Interview:
Interview is not Q & A: conversation
Interview does not follow up certain style
Pay attention to small things
Engage with other cnadidates
Be positive (I love research, but I miss clinic everyday)
Be energetic
Smile
Know when to stop (prepare two versions, brief and elaborated)
LISTEN, answer, ask and ENAGE
Dress:
Don’t put your dress in luggage, carry it with you, Iron may damage your
shirt
Before interview:
Everything on your CV can be asked
Your story in PS, your explanation for your gap, your low score, your
hobbies, your research
Know your interviewers and programs: show your interests and find
conversation topics, the more, the better, website, internal connections,
ask residents during dinner and lunch, interviews clinical interest,
research, publications, hobbies, friends, family dog, ect.
The day before interview:
Some programs provide dinner with current residents on the night before
interview day.
Dress conservatively: dress shirt and dress pant for males, formal or semi-
formal dress for formeales
What to ASK at dinner:
The working environment, living expense, where to live, neighborhood, what
to do on days off, any good places to hang out
How to sell yourself at dinner:
Don’t be too eager, relax, and choose some light topics
What to bring to Interview: CV, PS, USMLE transcripts, and ECFMG certificate
, Green card, Pens, EARS (LISTEN).
Interview Day:
Check-in
PD introductuction (LISTEN carefully), Exams, Interviews, Tour, show your
interest, but do not be too eager, Morning report, conferences, be modest
and conservative, Lunch, more interview, wrap up.
Arrive at the place 10 mins earlier
Introduce yourself to PD
Be polite
Thank you note:
Low risk intervention with variable benefits
Just after interview, holidays, several weeks before match day
TO whom: ALL the people you meet, and PD even if you didn’t met him (her).
