Specialties – separate packages (different PS, different recommendation
letters, CAF-CV?)
内科申请人较多
申请要早
ERAS filter
Letter of recommendation – very important
OB vs. externship – better to have
Personal statement: good first paragraph
Phone interview: do not pick up phone calls unless you are well prepared.
They would leave a message, prepare and then call back.
Letters of recommendations: > 2 should be in your specialty, not too short,
no negative comments, no spelling/grammar mistakes
Unconventional ways to get interviews
Via connections: anybody that can talk to PC or PD, ask recommenders to ask
for IV for you, directly contract people that may have influence on resident
selection (chair, PD, famous faculty in the program, chief resident, mail (
fedex/UPS) vs. email, : first page – shining point, CV (not CAF, simple,
delete unrelated experience),
after IV invitation was sent out (1-2 weeks later) and in Dec/Jan (someone
cancelled interview)
During interview:
Can I work with you? (reasonable conversation)
Speak slowly,
Offer help:
Interested in their program: do homework, ask appropriate questions
Do I want to work with you? (enjoyable conversation)
Career goals, insightful, research background, fun : common interest
Interview is a conversation, not Q&A
Pay attention to small things
(my office is messy. Dog photos, cat photos – show interest)
Engage with other candidates
Be positive: my research is productive, I miss patient care.
Know when to stop, two versions: short and a more detailed one,
Listen, answer, ask and engage,
Dress: professional, conservative, carry it with you, don’t put your dress
in the luggage, choose the most fit suit
Make-up: 淡妆
Know yourself – everything on your CV can be asked
Hobbies: movies, books,
Know your interviewers and programs
Website, (some PD like biking, mention it in the interview)
What to ask at dinner: leave tough Q to AMG
Don’t be too eager
What to bring to interview:
A copy of your resume, PS, USMLE transcripts, ECFMG certificate, green card,
EAD, pens, LISTEN
Listen to PD introduction
Exam – not common, (malignant program?)
Don’t eager to answer questions for interns
Thank you note – low risk with variable benefits
Right after interview, Christmas, new year, several weeks before Match
Too all the people
Email vs. letter vs postcard
More Specific
Smile is good, don’t giggle. – sign of nervousness
Don’t be too defensive (I don’t think I have been away from clinic for too
long. Better answer – I definitely understand your concern. However, …….
.)
Don’t be Too modest vs brag (I graduated from the best medical school in
China. Best hospital in the Asia, et al) |
