I would not recommend you to switch to Med tech unless you are out of
options and in dire situations and have no other options. However, if you
really want to do it, then I would suggest to work in the clinical chemistry
lab because it,s the lab that uses most automated instrument and kind of
related to your degree.
Also, no, yo cannot study on your own for Med tech because lots of courses
require labs and special trainings except clinical chemistry. You will need
to study clinical chemistry, hematology(use microscope to identify normal
and abnormal red and white bood cells as well as the different stages of
abnormal leukemia and cancer cells and the different blood diseases), blood
bank and blood transfusions, medical microbiology and how to clinically
isolate, grow and identify them, immunology and a lot of others.

Doesn't worth the switch. It is a boring job with lower social status than

For anyone who is following this and is still insterested in getting into
Medical Technology program, I forgot to mention that if you have decided and
wanted to apply for Medical Technology program, make sure you try to get
into a program that is accredited by the American Society of Clinical
Pathology (ASCP) or National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory
Sciences (NAACLS). ASCP is more well-known than NAACLS. Only programs that
are accredited will require clinical rotations and need to practice in
hospital settings. If your program is not accredited by either one of these
agencies, you cannot sit for the national certification exam, however, you
can still take your state licensure exam!

Some people have send personal emails to me asking more questions and
information about the Medical technology program and career. I will try to
explain and answer those questions as reasonable as I can. I will post some
of the answers in here for anyone who might have the same questions and
hopefully will offer some assistance to those who need them.
1. You can take two weeks of vacation together if you manager allows it. It
depends on how your manager schedules vacation. The place that I work, we
can only choose two weeks of vacation during prime time (summer, christmas
week, thanksgiving, easter). However, if you choose non-prime time, we can
take 4 weeks off at the same time. It depends on your job and the place you
work.
2. Typical day work in a hospital is like this: you come in to work, start
up the instrument you are going to work or assign to you, run your quality
controls on your instrument, make sure your instrument is working properly,
then get your patient samples and start running them. However, if you
quality controls have problems or instrument problems, you will have to
trouble shoot what problems and fix the problems. If you cannot fix the
problem, then call the instrument company for technical assistance over the
phone and you make have to ask a technical person to come to your office to
fix the problem if you cannot fix it. It depends on how much work in your
lab, the hospital i am working for is very busy, we are constantly moving
around. Basically, besides the 1 hour lunch time, you are expecting to work
the rest of the 7 hours.
3. Lab is a small world, because usually managers know each other around the
area because hospitals and labs are not like cars and people. You can
only have a few hospitals and labs around your area, especially if you work
for a big lab or hospital.
4. The lab is always screwed up and get blamed because if there is any
problem arises on the patient, the first thing the doctors and nurses going
to blame is the lab. Also, many lab managers don't fight for their
employees and don't stand up for their employees. Even if not the lab's
problem, they still want to blame the lab
5.Reference labs such as Quest Diagnostics and Lab-Corp are usually more
busy and working for those lab usually involve a lot of evening or night
shift because they have to wait for patient specimens from outside. I don't
think you get more respect from working in a Reference lab than a hospital
lab. However, usually the benefits for a hospital job is better than the
benefits working for a reference lab. Especially for vacation and health
benefits and retirement plan, hospital is better than reference lab. Also,I
think working pressure is the same in reference lab and hospital lab. Since
i have not worked in a reference lab before, i cannot confirm that.
6. You can open your own lab, but i don't think you want to think about it
now. Opening a reference lab involves many factors and issues. You have to
deal to , accredating agency, State, and Federal government inspections,
fire department inspection. You have to deal with proficiency testings
from accredeting agencies and State governments. You have to deal with
employee competency training and testings. Even big hospital cannot
cooperate with these kinds of issues sometimes. Also, insurance
reimbursement is not that great for all the clinical tests that a doctor
orders for a patient

I am a second year MS student in this program, so far as I know, most of the
undergraduates get 50,000 after graduated from here and most of the
graduate students are more likely to be the supervisor. This program is very
busy and tough here and do not expect your ex-medical training could help
you here since they are more intendency to basic lab principles. I donot
have green card, this is also a big problem...
I was confused sometimes if I decided to take the board to be a doctor one
year ago which will not be as busy as study in this program........

First, there is a huage salary difference between associate degree and
bachelor degree, especially for Medical Technology technician versu Medical
Technologist. The difference is that a technician gets associate degree,
they do less complicated clinical test and earn less salary. Technologist
has a bachelor degree and does more complicated clinical test and has more
knowledge. If you are planning to study Medical Technology, i would advise
you to go for the 3 years study + 1 year training.
Medical technology program could be very difficult, it depends on the school
program that you are attending. Here is the school that I went for my
degree and I would say that it's very tough.
http://healthtechnology.stonybrookmedicine.edu/programs/clinica
I would say that this program is one of the toughest in New York State. I
would advise you to go to the school website and look up the program and see
what kind of courses you have to take to get an idea about the program.
Medical technology program does not deal with a lot of chemistry courses and
not too much on theories such as organic chemistry or biochemistry. Those
courses really don't apply to this program. The courses in the program
usually concentrate on the clinical sides of the test such as why does the
doctor order this test? If the test result is high or low, what is the
significance on the patients health or what happen to the patient if the
result is too high or too low? If someone feels sick and goes to see a
doctor, some of the courses will deal with why do the doctors order this
test and what are the significances of the tests that are related to the
patients symptoms. In addition, other courses teach you how to grow, isolate
and identify bacteria; how to use a microscope to identify normal and
abnormal red and white blood cells etc.
Also, the program does not deal with a lot of math or chemistry, very basic
materials in those two subjects. it deals with more medical principles and
physiology as well as clinical chemistry .
If you have a master degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry or related
chemistry area, why would you want to go into Medical laboratory? If the
answer is that you don't know what kind of career you want and you are lost
and you just want a stable job, then i would advise you to do it. I have
already stated all the positives and negatives about the career in the forum
already.
Also, which State are you in now? Have you tried to look up to see if the
State you are in now requires license or not? Look up the information and
see what other routes you can get a license or certification without going
back to school.

really want to do it, then I would suggest to work in the clinical chemistry
lab because it,s the lab that uses most automated instrument and kind of
related to your degree.
Also, no, yo cannot study on your own for Med tech because lots of courses
require labs and special trainings except clinical chemistry. You will need
to study clinical chemistry, hematology(use microscope to identify normal
and abnormal red and white bood cells as well as the different stages of
abnormal leukemia and cancer cells and the different blood diseases), blood
bank and blood transfusions, medical microbiology and how to clinically
isolate, grow and identify them, immunology and a lot of others.

still interested.

First, I don,t know which state you are in now, but I will tell you about
more info about Med tech. Currently, California has the highest salary pay
in the US, but it definitely requires license to practice in California.
From the top of my head, I know California, new York,
florida and illinoise require license to practice. Current starting salary
for med tech new graduates in new yorkis between 45000 to 50000 a year. 4
weeks of vacation per year plus other national holidays. Yearly salary
increase is about 3%. After you work ten years, your salary is around 60000
to 70000 a year. Job promotion is not very good, not too higher positions
are opening such as supervisor or manager.
Second, working hours are not set, sometimes you have to come to work at
different times of the day. For example, you will come at 7 am, 7:30, 8:00,
9:00 or even 10:00 in the morning and then leaves after 8 hours. Working in
hospital is usually 24 hrs. If you work day shift(8-4), you will have to
cover other Med tech who work (4-12) and (0-8)shift when they are on
vacations. Also work can be very stressful sometimes because you have to
deal with instrument problems and quality control problems.
I would not recommend you to switch to Med tech unless you are out of
options and in dire situations and have no other options. However, if you

Doesn't worth the switch. It is a boring job with lower social status than
postdoc. Won't make much higher salary either.

I really appreciate all the posts, especially you guys give me so much
detail. I guess porbably it is not a good idea for me now to switch to this
area. It seems that the schedule in hospital is an issue because I have a
baby and I have to be with her after work.Anyway, thanks everyone. Good luck
