1. Be pleasant, be pleasant, and be pleasant all the time. Put effort in to
make a comfortable workplace.
2. Do not argue with anyone and anywhere, whether they are attendings,
residents, nurses or janitors. You are not going to win any argument – you
are only going to lose it and make enemies quickly. Do not be upset about it
– harsh words happen to anyone and it is just the way it is. For issues
concerning other departments, just talk to me or other faculty, but do not
argue back.
3. Sign in time is 7AM. Sign out time is 6PM. After that, you finish the
rest of the day's work. After that, you have dinner and read Harrison’s
Principle of Internal Medicine. You either read Harrison’s before dinner,
after dinner, or during dinner. Oh, by the way, you have 15 minutes for
dinner.
4. Discharge fast, fast, fast. If you do not get your discharge paperwork
done on time, everyone will hunt you down, especially the chief resident, as
she knows karate.
5. Opinions do not matter much. We practice evidence-based medicine. Show
your evidence.
6. I advise you devote yourself totally to residency. I advise against
surfing internet, watching DVDs and taking advantage of living in New York
City (shows, theaters, restaurants, etc). In your free time, eat, sleep, and
read.
7. Take advantage of this learning opportunity. Every day of your residency
should be filled with learning. You will have a steep learning curve during
your first year. Read, read, and read, and you will grow tremendously. Also
, everyone has something to learn about. So get involved, step up and
interact with people in a positive way. Three years will fly by, and you
will learn the science and art of medicine. | P******a
