Now I have some thoughts to share with you. Please be advised, firstly,
those are very basic, big cows may get bored easily; secondly my points may
be biased, any constructive comments are very welcome; thirdly I wrote it in
English just because it saves my time, please forgive me for any typo /
grammar mistake. Fourthly, …… here we go---
Tips of surviving the first several months of internship
1、be familiar with common drugs name and dose (imaging during the rounds, the
team, usually means the resident and the attending, discuss some changes
about the patients’ management, you are suppose to jot it down and/ or put
the orders in at the same time or later. can you do it right away or you
need 10 more minutes to search those drugs or even worse you have no idea
what drugs they are talking about).
2、get an electrolytes protocol in your pocket once you start your training.
As you may find out very soon, electrolytes abnormalities are extremely
common in inpatient service, and electrolytes repletion is very basic yet
quite challenging if you have no idea how to do it. For example, in order to
correct the potassium level from 2.5 to 4, how much potassium you need to
give to patients? The protocol you can either get it from your hospital
order sets or by googling it.
3、learn from your peers: your intern fellows and your residents. For example,
listen to others: how do they present a case? How do they defend themselves
? Why that guy always leaves earlier than others (efficiency! efficiency!!
And efficiency!!!)? etc…. Get along well with your colleagues; friendships
can help you get through difficult times.
4、English: Imaging while you are writing your notes, can you still hear
others’ conversations? If a person wearing a mask or having slurred speech
talks to you, can you understand them? After you review a 10-page medical
record in couple minutes, can you tell others the key points in a few
sentences? Pay attention to jargons—can you understand them? Can you speak
them?
May have more thoughts later....
