4. Flushing Hosp, NY
A huge group of candidates, 15+ people. 11/11 was said to the 2nd or 3rd
patch of the season.
Interview started at 11:45without lunch. Gathered in a conf. room given
intro by PD, a very sharp and trim lady.
Then were divided into groups of 4 and dispatched to tour/interviews/essay
writing. Yes, essay writing, need to give several lines about why medicine,
what you think about Flushing Hosp, blah blah blah, also, a short biography
of self.
Strings of interviews by R2/R3, Chief of Medicine/one faulty, +/- PD.
Interviewers would score candidates on a pre-scale sheet.
R2: to me, this talk served as a screening process, for scores, hardware in
CV, oral English, GC status, etc.
What did you do before application? (Explain gap.)
How long did it take to finish all steps? ( !!!once again, don’t
compromise the flow for high scores. More important than 99s is your
whole package with no large gap. This can not be addressed enough. If there’s any gap, please prepare to explain in a reasonable way.!!!)
Oral English, rated on a scale of 1-5.
Immigration status, family info (mainly spouse: possibility of relocate)...
Chief of Medicine: (I didn’t pay attention to his title until I got his
card upon stepping out of that office -.-!!!) An Italiano in his 50s.
The chat started with intro of self. It was rather a chat than a Q&A
interview. Re: different neighborhoods in Queens/ Flushing, including real
estate price, parking issues. Graduate school training in Econ/Finance.
Different scuba diving sites in Central America and Mexico… Basically
everything but medicine…
If chosen for a pre-match offer, you will be asked to talk with PD: mainly
try to clarify your interest towards their program (how many/which programs/
frankly comparison of her program with others on your list, etc) If pre-
match offer given, deadline will be the end of the month.
Imp: this program has chosen candidates for pre-match prior to interview day
. If live performance does not deviate too much from expected, offer will
be given. 4 fellowships in-house.
Pros: a relatively safe neighborhood, pt population has large % of Asian (
mainly Korean and Chinese), Chinese speaking is a big plus. Moderate
workload, low-mediate attention from program leadership (towards residents’
personal/career development). Definitely a good place for Chinese folks.
Cons: not sure about quality of teaching, no reports/rounds involved in
interview schedule. | D********r

this really is regarding Flushing in Queens, does not necessarily mean the
program itself. sorry for any confusion. |
