象准备step1/2/3一样去准备面试.

• US clinical experience;
• English proficiency;
• communication skills;
• career goal.
I am the candidate you are looking for.

Zbbh(哲别):
Why IV-Candidates programs like:
1. Able to fulfil clinical duties: Can I work with you? (can you have a reasonable conversation?)
1)adequate spoken english: speak slowly, practice, practice, practice
2)adequate communication skills: look into eyes, listen, ask to repeat if you don’t understand, answer questions to the point, concise
3)adequate clinical skills after short training
4)energetic: open your eyes, look into eyes, smile, ask questions
5)good personality: smile, offer help
6)interested in their program: do homework, ask appropriate questions, ask for pre-match
2. Potentials: Do I want to work with you? (can you have a enjoyable conversation?)
1)Career goals
2)Insightful
3)Research background
4)Fun: common interest
IV:
IV is conversation, not Q&A.
IV doesn’t follow up certain style
Pay attention to small things
Engage with other candidates
Be positive: never use negative words
Be energetic
Smile, smile, smile
Know when to stop, for example when talking about your research.
Listen, answer, ask and engage.
Don’t put your dress in the luggage, carry it with you.
Choose the most fit suit.
Be aware iron may ruin your shirt.
Before IV: everything on your CV can be asked: your story in PS, explanation for your gap & your low score, hobbies, research
Know your interviewers and programs: the more, the better.
1. Show your interests and find conversation topics
2. Website, internal connections, ask residents during dinner or lunch
3. Interviewers clinical interest, research, publications, hobbies, friends, family dog, etc.
The day before IV:
Some very good programs provide dinner with current residents on the night before IV
Q to ask at dinner:
working environment, living expense, where to live, neighborhood, what to do on days off, any good places to hang out, leave tough Q to AMGs.
What to bring to IV: A copy of your resume, copies of letters from your recommenders
a copy of personal statement, copies of your USMLE transcripts & ECFMG certificate
a copy of your green card/EAD, pens, ears
IV day
Check-in, arrive 10 minutes earlier, introduce yourself to PC, be polite, etc.
PD introduction (listen carefully)
(Exams): rank the program low
IV
Tour, show your interest, but don’t be too eager
Morning report, conferences, be modest and conservatives, low-key.
Light lunch, don’t order too much, chat among applicants, clean up after yourself, etc.
More Ivs
Wrap up
After IV: say thank you and goodbye. Express your interest, ask for prematch if you want and if the program encourages.
Thank you note is a low-risk intervention with variable benefits.
When: after IV, during holiday season, before match day
Who: To everybody
Thank you note.
Common mistakes: 1. English: too fast, flat; 2. Nervous: giggle too much, tremble with fear; 3. Defensive: calm down; 4. Too modest vs brag, 5. Answers too long, too detailed: prepare 2 versions (simple version & detailed version)
Tell me about yourself: Short & concise (<2 min); Accomplishments; Positive only
Why IM: Persuade yourself; Patients contact for IM; Research;Personal story;Role model
Career goal; Consistency; Change specialty.
Why this program: Fits own career goals; Clinical oriented training; Diverse patient population; Large volume of clinical cases; Big names; Loaction; Excellent record; Family reasons; Friends or senior’s recommendation.
What are your overall career goals? If you fit their training philosophy; Practice; Academia; Determined; Local practice.
Tell me about your research: Concise, use layman language, etc.
Do you have any questions?
Don’t ask Q if you do not have
Don’t ask Q covered in their website
Don’t ask Q that lead to Q you can’t answer
Ask Q PD feels happy to answer.
Ask Q that lead to conversation.
Present a case:
1. Short: 1-2min

Zhang Lanjing: Pathology IV
IV goals:
1. To impress the interviewer that you are a good fit for the program-what’s your shining point? Hobby: football
2. To convince interviewers that you will like, and excel in, the program
3. To better understand program-to find the match.
Critical points:
1. Career goal: best aligned with your career path, either academic or private based
2. Culture immersion: know a little bit something out of the medical books.
3. Confidence: have a good faith in yourself first, and good luck will follow.
Suit, stationary, briefcase, portfolio
Study Q & A of your own
Know your own CV & PS, and the programs
Hobbies, sports, and entertainment
Keep eye contact, but not staring at interviewer
Gesture: Do not hold the purse or briefcase, rather place it on the floor
Do not ask faculty, but residents, about call schedule.
Do not be afraid of accent, live with it.
Pathology IV is less stressful than IM IV.
More focused on our research background
Favor low-key, solid style
Communication skills (voice stream)
References:
“Getting into a residency” Iserson
FA for the match 4th edition (FA series)
Pathology IV is more benign and usually doesn’t involve case report.

Knockingdown:
Always positive,don’t complain anything.
在tell me about yourself时不要有停顿.
知己知彼:don’t ask Q like: 1)do you have any concern about me? 2)Is there any research opportunities?

Q & A
