12:00AM sharp on Wednesday, I saw my step 3 score report on the candidate
website. It is 238/99. I am very happy about it.
Here is what I did for step 3:
1. Read JinHuaQu and found out what materials to use. I found that everybody
liked UW Q bank and CCS. All other materials are suggested by some people,
but not all the people. Another important factor is your step 2. So I did ..
2. UW MCQ bank twice, first time timed, unused, 66%. Second time marked only
. I did take detailed notes and read through them 2-3 times. These are high
yield questions in the real exam.
3. I also reviewed my step 2 UW notes. They are too long. I only went
through half of them. I listened to most of the IM step 2 kaplan video/audio
while feeding my baby.
4. I did not read any reference books other than above
5. For CCS, I did UW CCS 52 cases 2-3 times, read 41 cases 2-3 times, took
notes and summarized my own protocol. Take time to summarize your own
proctol is very important. Do not just memorize other people's protocol.
First go through all the cases fast and you will get a general idea (
emergency orders, PE, other general orders, specific orders depending on
what the case is about, monitor pt and lab etc.) and then go to details of
each case. These are high yields in the real exam. I did not use other
materials like CD and lectures.
6. NBME 660. These questions are too short comparing to real exam. UWSA 600/
239, hard and long questions. I recommended it because you can get a feeling
of the real test. And the real test is easier than it. USMLE CD 76%, done
in the test center. I think UWSA is the best test among all three.
7. Real Exam. Time management is crucial. I did finish each section on time,
rarely had time to look at the marked questions. Towards the later blocks,
I got more and more tired. Do not spend too much time on questions that you
do not know the answers. I will never know the answers for some questions
because I do not have clinical experience. There are easy questions. Do not
miss them because you are running out of time. Step 2 knowledge is very
important. I took my step 2 18 months ago and forgot a lot.
I feel CCS in real exam is more complicated than UW. In one case, the
patient did not become better until the case ended. Then I figured out when
I did not do. Another case was really a surprise. No matter what, UW 52+41
cases are very very important for exam purpose. But do not expect that you
see the exact cases
Done with USMLE. Now I have to deal with real patients...
At last, I want to thank my husband who supports my usmle journey for years,
my parents-in-law for helping taking care of my baby, and my lovely baby
for giving me tons of joy.
Thank many mm here for discussion about CCS cases and answering my questions
