l***o 发帖数: 578 | 1 Recently I interviewed the candidates for OB/GYN residency. Only one
candidate is IMG. I guess that she got the interview slot due to connection.
The rest are AMGs. I can tell the huge differences between IMGs and AMGs. I
want to summarize my understanding about how the program evaluates the
candidates. It doesn't exactly fit our CMGs. But I hope that we could learn
some lesson from it to improve our chance.
Frist, most of the interviewed AMGs have very decent scores. It is different
from what I though before. One of the girls even got 672 in Step 2. The
program still give a score in their academic performance.
Their background is relative simple. Most of the candidates has no gap in
their education. The program really considers the gap. Most of them have a
very simple research background. In our CMSs standard, we may consider it as
zero. However, if the candidate has publications, he/she will be considered
as a zebra instead of a horse. Some of the candidates entered a Master
programs to improve their possbility for medical school. Some of the
candidates have very interesting part-time working experience, such as chef,
during college.
The program really focus on the candidates' desire to come. Unlike most of
the CMGs, who are desperate for any position, AMGs have more options. If an
AMG grew up in CA and has all of her/his family in CA, the possiblity to
stay in East Coast is lower.
The night before the interview, the candidates are going to have a dinner
party with the residents. It is very important. The candidates cannot be
quiet or talktive. Everyone must fit in very well. Any inproper behavior is
fatal.
The residents play a very important role to evaluate the candidates.
Therefore, you must be very, very careful to anything and any person.
The interviewers are going to discuss the candidates after the interview.
Everyone's opinion is counted in. The weight from resident, attending, PD,
and chairman is the same. The final score is calculated from every
interviewer evulation. Sometimes the interviewers may disagree with each
other. It doesn't matter.
After all the interviews, all the interviewers are going to sit down to rank
them. Of course, the PD and Chairman are going to finalize the list or
consider the connection. | t*******n 发帖数: 224 | 2 Thank you very much! What kind of score is called a decent score? Do you
look at three digit score, or two digit score?

got 262 (sorry for the wrong input in my original post) in step 2.
For AMGs in OB/GYN, scores>90 will be decent. | s*****9 发帖数: 445 | 5 thank you very much for the info | k********n 发帖数: 756 | 6 The AMGs also look much much more confident and professional, which is
radiating from inside even they are just in polo. I believe it is built upon
daily patient interaction and their appropriate arrogance which is not a
bad thing at all. | m**********3 发帖数: 706 | 7 "if the candidate has publications, he/she will be considered as a zebra
