just shadowing/following an attending and no direct patient contact. You
may attend some case discussions, meetings and lectures.
An externship on the other hand, offers some hands-on U.S. clinical
experience. Students/graduates can touch/examine most patients. Externs are
like interns but without a contract with the hospital and their work is
unpaid like students.

Clerkship - our third/forth year clinical rotations. Under physicians' supervision
we can have some hands-on clinical experiences.
Elective - this is relative to the "required" or "core" rotations. In the
third year our core rotations are IM, Peds, OB/GYN, surgery, Psych, and
primary care. Our available electives are Neuro, anesthesiology and radiology.
In the forth year, we can select pretty much any specialties, such as Orth,
plastic, nuclear medicine, Rad Onc, Derm | t*******i

most likely they will arrange the insurance for you. Some programs may not
want to deal with this so they will not offer an externship to people
without insurance.
