three.
If 9 people cite your work and if
you published one paper: 9 cites.
published 3 papers: probably only 3 cites each paper.
If you want to join industry, the number of paper may count cause they don't
care what are those papers. But for industry, patent may weight much more than
papers.
Conclusion: go academia, publish high quality papers.
go industry, get patents. If no patent, publish a lot of papers.
