I just followed the footsteps of our friend WH, who is of course
omnipresent on MITBBS, from the Hunan board to this corner far,
far away from where I usually hang out, and was thrilled to find a
hidden treasure chest of good old Russian music. As a fellow
aficionado of just about anything Russian but their politics and
their history over the past couple of centuries, my hat goes off to
Alafayatown for assembling this collection of musical gems from a
vast ocean of worthy candidates to choose from.
To add my two cents' worth, here are a few tunes that I came
across on YouTube lately. The first one, Не одна во поле
дороже нька (Not a Single Path Crosses the Field), might be
familiar to a lot of you, and I love Dmitri Hvorostovsky's arrangement
of it (too bad I could not find it on YouTube or anywhere else online),
but this voice of Boris Shtokolov...oh man oh man oh man! :-)

And then there is this beautiful little song, also sung a cappella. I had
never heard it before, and Google tells me that its title, Черёмуха,
means "bird cherry."

While we are at it, here's one more. I have no idea what the title—Chto
Stoish Kachayas—means, and since somebody has written it in the Latin
alphabet, even Google won't be of much help on this one. :-(

Nothing gets one's juice flowing like a good old Russian song from
the Soviet era... That national anthem is, IMHO, absolutely one of
the best ever written, ranking right up there with "La Marseillaise"
and "Deutschland über Alles." But in comparison to the current
version, I'm rather partial to the Soviet original. Although the only
difference between the two is the lyrics and I don't understand a
single word in either, there is just somehow a different ring to
each that distinguishes it from the other.

www.sovmusic.ru...yes, it's a great source for Soviet-era music. I
once got all kind of goodies from there and, together with a few
tracks from elsewhere, made a compilation CD of my own. I've
enclosed below the CD cover I came up with for it; how do you
guys like the play list? :-)
There are, I think, maybe about 10 copies of that CDs floating
around somewhere in the world, and one of these days it may
become a collector's item. :-D | N****f
