Many outsiders have the natural tendency to compare Los
Angeles to more familiarly structured cities --- and find
it wanting. A recently transplanted New Yorker said to me,
"oh, you're writing a book about Los Angeles? That should
take about half an hour." Others, especially Europeans,seem
