Life and Death in Shanghai。

'I had to stop speaking Chinese. Otherwise, I felt my English would
deteriorate as well. My husband is upset that our children won't learn
Chinese.' She shrugs, lightly: English is a language on the ascendant
in China anyhow, she says, so it's not that much of a loss to the
children...
They don't bother with Chinese festivals or rituals at home, not even
New Year or the special 'long life' birthday noodles that she writes about
so evocatively...
When she goes back to Beijing to visit her
sister and widowed father, she finds communication difficult. Nowadays
she even dreams in English.
