i got the feeling, she was very frustrated by the writing career.
the last two long novels were composed under some political rule,
to throw a shade *against* communist China.
much similiar to the case when she was in China around 1949,
she made change in "the 18 springs", composed "xiaoai",
to have some bright thing *for* communist new China.
Against or for, all looked so forced, lacked the original individuality
she had been good at before.
furthermore, she complained that she had the plot,

but i guess people tend to look at her life with lofty idealization.;-)
zhang seemed like a loner and introvert.
her hubby was easygoing and enjoyed making friends with others,
which suited her sensitive nature as a compensation.
this is very practical choice,
as earthy as any woman would consider.;-) |
