3: How do I set up things so that when a new drive is inserted into the raid
array, it will be automatically formatted and configured?

no, you are setting up the software raid right?
depends on your harddrive itself, I think only SCSI drives are hot swappable

Don't think software raid can do this, unless your write your own script to
monitor?

drive per cable which makes hot swapping, or the capability to replace
components while the system is still running, possible without the fear of
affecting other devices on the data cable.
