you can deposit any check with or without correct date.
The real question is if he is dead, you have to make sure there is
sufficient fund in his checking, otherwise you have to pay the check bounce
fee. I think you should talk to the dead professor's family or lawyer to

if that is the case, i have no idea how to get his lawyer information, maybe
even he did not even have a lawyer for his will. In this case, i would
suggest you try to deposit your check one by one(after previous check was
clearer). And keep your finger crossed if there is enough money in his
