A over-simplied example from one working at a firm:
An associate's billing rate is $200/hour (the amount will charge a client)
An assignment normally will cost a client $2K (usually set for transaction work, such as patent prosecution)
The associate worked 20 hours to finish the assignment; however, he/she can only bill 10 hours to the client. The associate must eat the other 10 hours himself/herself. Sometime, the client may even contest the billing, and the firm may agree to reduce by 10 to

Some data points re: hours at biglaw firms -
http://www.averyindex.com/2007_longest_hours.php
http://www.averyindex.com/2007_shortest_hours.php
Of course actual work hours vary depending on your practice area, firm
location, and the overall market condition. Generally speaking, patent
prosecution has relatively stable and manageable hours, while corporate,
especially M&A in places like NYC and Hongkong, could have huge ups and
downs. When projects are busy, it is not uncommon to bill 300 hour

1. Most first year associates get paid more than six figures.
This is public records. Just go to http://www.infirmation.com/shared/insider/payscale.tcl
to check out salary in all law firms.
2. Law firm are not labs. But if you are doing patent prosecution, a PhD
degree is definitelt required. Patent prosecution is like writing a
scientific paper. You can not do it if you do not have a advanced degree.
Besides, if you do not have an advanced scientific degree,

You do know that many Harvard graduates get into public interest or clerk
for judges right after they graduate. Those jobs don't get paid well, but
they are highly desirable for Harvard and Yale students. Harvard has an
excellent loan repayment program that allows its students to do public
interest work.
The average salary of UChicago or UMich is higher than Harvard's precisely
because not many students there are interested in public interest or
clerkship.

I recommend this study to you: http://www.elsblog.org/the_empirical_legal_studi/2008/07/how-the-cravath.html
You will see that salaries in the legal profession follow a bi-modal
distribution. There are nearly as many 6-figure salary earning law grads as
"poor" law grads. Citing a low average salary as you did does not tell the
whole story. For reasonably diligent people who manage to get into a top-
tier law school and don't mind the hours and culture of biglaw, earning 160k
market salary is no

Uppen law

depends. Vault 100 or AmLaw 200. for some people only top 10 count, others
top 30, 50, or 100, depending on their snobbish level. Some prestigious
local boutiques are well regarded as well.

Calm down. No need to get a heart attack over my post. I was only trying
to share with you some well-researched data which is relevant to the
subjects of your previous posts. Maybe I was assuming too much by thinking
that you would be reasonably open to new information.
I think people have problem with your initial statements because they are
too one-sided. Your first post on this thread attacks the credibility of
another post containing nothing but the market salary for biglaw. I see you
