302 | 9 I don't recommend getting a JD. First, you will be overqualified when you
get out of law school. For entry level positions they don't want to pay you
for your degrees plus your JD. For senior level positions you will not have
enough experience since you only have the degrees. If you want to be more
financially secure, try getting involved in leadership roles in your company
and into management. On the side, you can see if there are any consulting
jobs or businesses you can start for extra money. |

For the over qualification problem you mentioned, did you hypothesize that
or have you heard any real story? I know over qualification IS a problem for
some, especially in the tech-oriented fields.
Please comment.Thanks |

one of the few legal jobs that are very associate-friendly. It is also the

w******o 发帖数: 302 | 13 tech PhD + JD is overkill, the patent atternoys I know are all just bachelor
or ms + JD. On the other hand, if you are bio major then PhD is essentially
required with JD since the market is so saturated.
If OP is really interested in legal work there is also the expert witness
track which may be more fitting and rewarding:

w*********n 发帖数: 331 | 14 I don't agree. There are not many patent attorneys with PHD + JD in hot
areas (for example, CS or EE) are because of limited supply of people with
those qualifications in the legal field, not because tech PhD + JD is an
overkill.
Just imagine that when meeting a client, do you want to have somebody with a
PhD or someone with a BS or MS. PhD carries more prestige than a BS or MS,
and the legal field is very much prestige driven.
But still, law school is such a huge effort. If you are not 100% dec

w******o 发帖数: 302 | 15 Of course, if you have Phd+JD and your EE/CS, you will probably have an
upper hand to get hired by a firm. However, what I'm saying is, because the
market does not require you to get a PhD+JD to get hired, it is in my
opinion overkill to get both degrees just to become a patent lawyer. As you
suggested, there are better ways for financial security and happiness.

Here are some points that i'd like to share with some of those who'd like to
explore their careers in US IP law.
1) Some Ph.D degrees, like Bio and Chemistry Ph.Ds, are much appreciated and
welcome because an attorney/agent has to understand the invention in order
to reply to Office Actions. However, for some other majors like computer
science and electrical engineering, Ph.D is not a must, mostly because Ph.D
programs in those majors ar |

In patent area, you have to be highly proficient at language skills
For finace + CS, see quant board at mitbbs

In finace at street, you need to be very good at numbers (including
programming, c++, matlab) and probabilities.
Both areas need your passion.
