Virality is the holy grail of marketing and advertising, yet the mechanics
behind it is still fully not understood. Many brands attempt to create viral
content to no avail while others discover that they have gone viral without
even trying. What could be explaining this phenomenon?
Yesterday was an eventful day for netizens of the social sphere. From llamas
drama to net neutrality–nobody could have ever guessed that both of these
events were going to be overshadowed by a dress, also known as #thedress.
You have most likely seen the #thedress trending in one of your social
networks
by now–if not, here it is on LinkedIn. The entire phenomenon began when a
Tumblr user uploaded a photo of a dress with a simple question on Wednesday:
"Guys please help me - is this dress white and gold, or blue and black?" The
rest was history and the internet exploded with the debate whether the dress
was white-gold or blue-black.
The hashtag has been trending on Facebook, Twitter, and even Google search.
Buzzfeed reported a website outage after receiving over 21 million clicks
from
its featuring of #thedress. Celebrities and government officials alike have
gone on #thedress train in the past day.
