Joe Biden reported earning more than $12,000 in rental income last year,
months after the White House acknowledged that the U.S. Secret Service was
paying rent to the vice president so that agents could stay in a cottage on
his property in Delaware.
The tax return, filed jointly with Mr. Biden's wife, Jill, doesn't specify
how the couple earned the rental income. But The Washington Times reported
on the arrangement with the Secret Service last year based on a review of
federal purchasing records.
At the time, a spokeswoman for Mr. Biden said the cottage on Mr. Biden's
property already was a rental when the Secret Service began staying in the
house.
According to Mr. Biden's office, the cottage had been occupied by Mr. Biden'
s mother, Jean Biden, who died in 2010 at 92.
After her death, Mr. Biden asked the Secret Service about renting the
property, but the agency declined and a private tenant whose identity has
not been disclosed moved in.
When that tenant moved out, however, the Secret Service reconsidered,
approached Mr. Biden about renting the property and moved in. | t***e
