Purpose
We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to focus on the
synthesis and heterogeneity of two-dimensional (2D) materials. As a postdoc,
you will support in-house science projects at the Center for Nanophase
Materials Science (CNMS) that focus on how heterogeneity in 2D materials and
their architectures can be understood and controlled through different
synthesis and processing strategies for tailored functionality. This
position resides in the Functional Hybrid Nanomaterials Group within the
CNMS, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD), at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
(ORNL).
As a core team member, you will help us develop and apply techniques to
understand how to control the growth or assembly of 2D materials and assess
their heterogeneity and functional properties. You will work primarily
within the Functional Hybrid Nanomaterials Group using established physical
vapor deposition and processing facilities (e.g., PLD, CVD, stamping,
exfoliation, etc.) and characterization tools (optical spectroscopy, AFM,
electronic transport, etc.), but will also collaborate with a diverse team
of experimentalists and theorists at the CNMS to develop novel concepts that
take advantage of our experts in nanofabrication, in situ electron
microscopy, chemical functionalization, and scanning probe microscopy to
reveal the link between the heterogeneity and properties of the 2D materials.
OVERVIEW: This position provides an excellent opportunity to learn and
perform ground breaking research in the synthesis and processing,
characterization, and functionality of heterogeneous 2D materials within the
stimulating, multidisciplinary environment at the CNMS. You will join
research teams and carry out research to understand how heterogeneity,
driven by synthesis and assembly techniques (e.g., PLD, CVD, stamping,
exfoliation, nanofabrication, etc.), determines the functionality (e.g.,
electronic, spintronic, catalytic, etc.) of the materials that crosscut
theme activities at the CNMS, with the principal goal of high-quality and
high-impact scientific publications. As a national user facility, the CNMS
supports a multidisciplinary and dynamic research environment to understand
nanoscale materials and phenomena, and offers a diverse spectrum of
nanoscience research activities including a nanofabrication facility;
laboratory-based research on macromolecular materials, catalysts, functional
nanomaterials, and magnetism and transport; characterization with electron
microscopes, scanning probes, and x-ray diffraction and scattering, and
laser spectroscopy.
Major Duties/Responsibilities IN THIS POSITION YOU WILL:
Work as part of a dynamic team conducting CNMS in-house research that
advances our understanding of nanomaterials while also leading to the
development of capabilities that will eventually become available to the
CNMS user community
Perform synthesis and assembly of atomically-thin two-dimensional materials
by techniques like PLD, CVD, stamping, exfoliation, nanofabrication, etc.
Perform characterization of 2D materials and their architectures by a
variety of techniques (AFM, SEM, Raman and other laser spectroscopic
techniques such as PL, absorption, PL lifetime studies).
Prepare 2D materials using lithographic clean-room techniques and perform
electronic transport measurements.
Work across the Heterogeneity theme and other themes at the CNMS to prepare
samples for the highly specialized, in situ electron microscopy, scanning
probe, and other unique facilities designed to characterize the structure
and properties of these materials
Help to establish new facilities and user capabilities at the CNMS, and
collaborate with users for additional publications
Present research and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in
a timely fashion
Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program
requirements.
Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values
and ethics.
Qualifications Required
Basic Qualifications: To be considered for this position you must have:
A Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or
related science completed in the last five years.
A strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by
publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or presentations at scientific
conferences.
Preferred Qualifications: This experience is to your advantage:
Experience in the synthesis and processing of two-dimensional materials,
especially transition metal dichalcogenides;
Experience with device fabrication and low temperature transport
measurements
Electron microscopy experience for the characterization of nanomaterials
A background in laser spectroscopy or processing of nanomaterials
Experience in scanning probe microscopy
Self-motivated, with good interpersonal, communication, and presentation
skills
Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with research staff at all
levels and to work within a multi-disciplinary team.

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to
the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before
starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months
with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are
