Tell Congress you support visas for STEM grads
Recently, bipartisan legislation was introduced in the U.S. Congress that
would create a new visa category for foreign-born, American-educated
students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.
The SMART Jobs Act of 2012 would allow foreign students educated in graduate
programs in the United States to more easily stay and work in the country.
Upon earning their graduate degrees, these students would be allowed to
remain in the U.S. for up to 12 months while they look for work related to
their field of study. Once employed, the students would be allowed to change
their immigration status and receive a green card. These new STEM green
cards would not count toward any existing green card caps for limits. The
legislation is strongly endorsed by SPIE.
To make sure Congress passes this bill, legislators need to hear from their
constituents, letting them know that this is something important to them and
that they want action to be taken. Please take just a minute and email your
