If you're single and have no intent to buy a house, then 60k in St. Louis may only be worth 80k in San Jose; if you have a family to raise and consider buying a house, then 60k in St. Louis is worth at least 150k in San Jose. So on average, I think the comparison does have a point.

退休的时候都把房子卖了搬到便宜的地方去，那区别就出来了 ：P

A nice assumption, unfortunately not always true :) Also, you paid more mortgage interest and probably more property tax if the house price is high.

多华人多少年来对加州趋之若鹜，难道是因为那里的living stand == st louis？。。。
