or can it be before thesis defense date and in the middle of a semester (for
which I register some credit hours to keep full-time F-1 status)?

Does not have to be the end of a semester.
If you have found a job, then the sooner the better. It can even be before
your defense date. But remember you only are eligible to apply for opt 100
days ( or some time ) before your graduation.

Thanks for the reply. You said
"100 days before your graduation",
you mean 100 days before my "program end date", or the actual graduation
date (for example, December 2010 degree)? thanks!

发帖数: 20 | 6 刚问了一下我们的isso。给的答复是这样的：
比方说：你的current i-20 expires on August 15th,然后你的defense date是August
1st，那么你的opt的start date最晚不能晚于Oct 1st（60天 after your defense
date），你的program end-date就是August 1st。
至于opt的start date可不可以早于defense date，我没问，但是我觉得应该可以，不
过可能没有人那么做吧，因为没有必要，除非你要用opt先工作，再答辩。
答辩的时间基本上可以是一年中任何一个时间，opt的start date也一样。
但是不能晚于你答辩后的60天（这个是我的理解）。

Doesn't matter start date and end date you want to put in there, the actual
EAD effective date will be adjusted based on approval date.
