想问一下现在做software engineer的人(尤其是已经工作一段的)
你们的career path是怎么计划的呢?
engineer --> manager --> higher level manager ...?
如果自己没有创业的打算,而且不是很有野心,有多少(sr.) software engineer 呢?
接近60的时候,如果不是manager,大家还在做software engineer吗?
很困惑

It means that it is possible end up with a (sr.) software engineer
Is it rare?
How many percentage could this be?

one percent become lead , CTO.....
one percent become old engineer.

Nobody can answer that question and it probably wont be useful if you know
the answer. I would be more interested in knowing how people actually moving
up the ladder.

You are very right "It would be more interested in knowing how people
actually moving up the ladder."
But still this kind of information (I know it's not a definite answer either
) is useful when sb need to choose
between two different paths.
On one path, I can see clearer what can happen.
On this direction, I can not see the path since I never had a chance to work in industry.
that's why the information from the people who really work in the industry
can be very helpful.

Thanks for the information... "actually it is very possible..."
When there is not a lot of voices,
it may also mean many people in this direction don't know where they are
heading

It's good to think carefully before you make decisions
It may not be good to think too much though..

besides the management path, for technical path the following titles are
often used.
Member of Technical Staff (Engineer)->Staff Engineer->Principal Engineer->
Destinguished Engineer->Fellow->CTO

我虽然也经常想这个问题,
但是对比一下民工的career path,结论就出来了
千万个民工,干到队长的有若干,但是不多;
有一级工,二级工,高级工等。。
大部分挣了些钱后回家养孩子媳妇
少数人跳槽进了演艺圈,比如说阿杜什么的

30 岁时, 当个software engineer 很容易, 当个 lead 或manager 就比较 难, CTO
更难;
60 岁时, 当个software engineer 并不比 当 manager/director/CTO 容易。
一句话, 60 岁时, 不论 是 engineer, 还是 CTO, manager, director, 比例都
极低。
绝不会超过 5%。
所以, 那些其他major的人, 转入 software engineer 前应该明白。

正因为Software engineer 工作好找, 所以淘汰率高。 你想, 每年都有多少万fresh
graduate, 只要逻辑清楚, 就可以当software engineer。入门极低, 将来淘汰率
必高

多谢斑竹指点,以后这种问题我就去working版了
我身边大部分人朋友都还是在~30,所以很正常有很多software engineer
但是我周围也有朋友,在40-50岁的时候被公司lay off(去年)
有intel的,还有几个别的加州的计算机公司
这几个人都还是已经做到manager/director级别的
看到他们家里一般都有两个小孩,10-20之间,
所以感觉压力还是很大
不过这种情况,就是不知道有多普遍了
我也认识很多人当然还是干的好好的就是了

其实任何行业都有和软件行业一样的问题, 老化, 淘汰, 只是几率上的差别。
软件行业本身有很多不同的方向,不只是有微软股沟亚马逊,差别也很大。比如说目前在国内还在从事汽车 ECU 软件开发的以前的同事, 大部分年纪都在 35 岁以上, 我不觉得有多少年轻人可以很快的就取代他们。直接一点说, 有人试图以 30W 年薪在北京找一些汽车级嵌入式软件工程师, 一年下没找到几个满意的, 是要求高嘛, 显然不是。 俺现在和一个 差不多 60 岁的软件工程师一起工作, 伊 $130/h, 喜欢做, 好好做, 就行了
