On Thursday, Oct. 14, the first-ever exchange-traded fund that provides
exposure to China equity A shares began trading. New York-based Van Eck
Global launched the Market Vectors China ETF (PEK). The new fund will give
investors access to the A share market by tracking the CSI 300 Index, which
exclusively contains China A shares securities.

Investors should note that PEK will not actually own A shares. Instead, the
fund intends to invest in swaps and derivatives to achieve performance that
will closely track that of the free-float market-capitalization CSI 300
Index, which includes stocks listed in Shanghai and Shenzhen and which, as
of Sept. 30, captured about 64% of the total market cap of the two exchanges
. About 62% of the index consists of large-cap stocks, while the remaining
38% is small- and mid-cap stocks. Additionally, the index's heaviest
weighting is in financials (34%), followed by industrials (17%) and
materials (15%).
PEK will charge an expense ratio of 0.72%. |
