What about AIG, mid yr 2017 bond, about 6% yield, safer than BP

mw was probably looking at the issue maturing on 08/2011 which is discounted
and has a ytm of 4.6%. that is about 270 bps above an equivalent A rated
corp bond. if you look into it more carefully, it has 3 more payments left.
so if you don't believe that bp will cease to exist in 18 months, this is
not a bad return. the only thing i don't like about this bond is the low
coupon (1.55%).
i think the 11/2013 issue has the potential for better value. it had a ytm
of over 9% t

especially when the risk is higher than weeks ago. |

my screen shows that only one bp bond very briefly reached over 9% in the
past 2 weeks and it subsided quickly too. bill gross talked about buying
some of that bond 2 days later.
i also see some bp-backed muni bonds in il and tx, and they are yielding
over 10%. looks like bp is (or perhaps was) helping these local gov'ts build
a chemical plant and refinery respectively. |

"Under the new plan, the government will get a $40 billion equity stake in
AIG, spend as much as $30 billion on securities underlying the insurer's
credit default swaps, and spend up to $22.5 billion to buy residential
mortgage securities.
AIG will issue preferred shares to the government that carry a 10 percent
dividend. The government will maintain its roughly 80 percent stake in AIG,
making it the biggest beneficiary of the revised bailout."
