s*******d 发帖数: 126 | 1 I apologize for making two big mistakes in my original post. Thanks to
KennyD and lazycat for pointing them out.
(1) I didn't take into account that contribution to a taxable account
can only be after-tax money. I mixed things up because I was
thinking about a conversation that I had with a friend not too long
ago on traditional IRA funded with after-tax money (for people who
make more than the limits allowed).
(2) You do not pay social security and medicare taxes on the growth of
traditional IR |

high state tax area and plan to move to a no-state tax area when
you retire.

K****D 发帖数: 30533 | 4 hmm, the conclusion is completely opposite now, hehe.
Some of my opinions:
1) It's probably not fair to consider state tax when contributing
and do not consider state tax when cashing out. Not all people
work in a state-tax state and retire in a no-state-tax state.
I personally have never paid any state tax; and I think many
people don't move to another state when retiring.
2) Dividends kill the deal. Is there a way to find more tax-efficient
index funds?
One bug:
"In a taxable account:

s*******d 发帖数: 126 | 5 huh? isn't non-deductible IRA the same as the dollar comparison I used in
the original post, after-tax contribution and tax-deferred growth? that only
logically applies to people who make more money than what's allowed to
contribute to Roth IRA. What 功课 is there to do here?

s*******d 发帖数: 126 | 8 I disagree with you here but I could be wrong with this. I am just too lazy
to google it. I think that if one makes less than a certain amount, such as
$80,000 for a married couple and $50,000 for a single, one can still
contribute to both 401K and deductible IRA.
Clearly, if a couple makes more than $80,000 but less than $155,000 (income
limit for Roth IRA contribution), they should fund Roth IRA rather than non-
deductible IRA to get both tax-free growth and income.
Wouldn't nondeductible IRA

s*******d 发帖数: 126 | 9 I agree that I am being slightly unfair when and how I choose to include
state income tax in the calculation. Some people do move after they retire
to a non-State tax state, but that is in the minority. A more plausible
factor in the future, as far as our generation is concerned, is the increase
of income tax to cover deficits and social security and what not. This
certainly would argue for funding Roth IRA/401K now if possible, if one
believes that the current tax rates are low (which is actual

IRA: Roth vs. Traditional
The decision between choosing a Roth IRA vs. a Traditional IRA depends
mostly on whether you are likely to be in a higher tax bracket in the future
(in which case a Roth IRA is better) or a lower tax bracket in the future (
in which case a conventional IRA is better). Roth IRAs also have a bit more
flexibility in terms of early withdrawal. If your tax bracket does not
change while you are working vs. when you retire, you will end up with th
