MECHANICAL FAILURE SIMULATION OF AN IN VIVO HUMAN VERTEBRA
ABSTRACT:
Computational tomography-based scans contain information that can be used to
reconstruct a human vertebra and, along with densitometry studies, help in
the understanding of bone failure. An in vivo digital model of a human lumba
r vertebra was developed using this equipment. Though the human vertebra is
constituted by trabecular and cortical tissue, in patients suffering osteopo
rosis, mechanical loads are primarily absorbed by the cortical wall. The wor
k presents a reconstruction of the cortical tissue of a male patient, in ord
er to obtain a virtual model that can be used in mechanical finite element s
imulations as well as in 3D printing with ABS material to perform mechanical
compression tests. The mechanical failure of the ABS model during compressi
on can be accurately predicted by the finite element simulation and, the com
bination of both techniques may be a good approximation to understand verteb
ra stresses and failure zones due to bone ailments.
