I hope this email finds you well. This is xxx. I am writing to ask a big
favor from you. Your kind help will have invaluable influence on my academic
career and personal life.
I am working in Dr. xxx’ laboratory at xxx, where I have been pursuing PhD
since xxx. Prior to starting in my current position, I completed my Master
training under the mentorship of Dr. xx at xx University. My research is
focused on xxx, especially of xx. As a consequence of my research interests,
I have followed your research and publications and benefited tremendously
from your excellent work of xx.
Originally from China, I am currently in the position of petitioning for U.S
. residency to allow me to continue my research career in the USA. The
United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) expects
applicants to provide reference letters from prominent experts who know the
applicant’s research contribution but do not have personal connection with
him/her. You are an expert in the field in which I am doing research.
Because of this, and because you have a few excellent publications cited my
paper titled “xx” for xx journal in 2007, I was hoping you may be willing
to consider writing a letter of reference giving your opinion of my
contributions so far to the field, and supporting my application. Having
strong reference from expert like you weighs heavily in the decision-making
process of residency petitions. That’s the reason why I am saying your
generous help will be extremely important for my career and my family.
If you are kindly willing to write the letter, I will send a sample draft
for your reference. The process is actually very easy. I will have the
letter drafted and you could revise as you think appropriate. You can simply
email back the PDF copy of the letter with digitized signature. Please be
aware that the letter is just for immigration purpose and it is not intended
for any other usage.
I completely understand that this is a somewhat unusual request, but I felt
that because of our overlap in research interests that you are an
irreplaceable expert to evaluate my scientific contributions. I also
understand you are extremely busy. So it is fine you need a couple of weeks
to fit it in your schedule. Also please do let me know if it's not
convenient for you. I really appreciate your time and consideration and a
copy of my CV is attached for your reference.
