or those who enter as US citizen etc. Typically 6 months

"The officer will stamp your passport or let you know how long you can stay
in Canada. The period is usually six months. In some cases, the officer may
limit this period to cover only the intended purpose of your visit. Ask
questions if you are unsure about anything."
However, then you are at the POE they will ask you questions, and based on
your answers, they can change the time. I would not be surprised if someone
attending a conference only will be allowed to stay only for three months or
so.
Also, 30 days before the status expiration you have the option to apply for
an extension.
