your reference letter. I asked a journal editor write me a reference
letter, and put the phrase "I learned XXX's work through his publications,
and invited him as a reviewer for our journal" in the letter to indicate
that he didn't know me personally. I am not sure if IO consider the editor'
s letter as independent or not, but I think it help a lot in my case.
Also, a lot of editors are top scientists in your field, their letter could
be very helpful if you phase it correctly, therefore, it might not be that
important to categorize it as dependent or independent.
