Here is some information about modified seeds in general that also explains
my points from the short answer:
most of modified seeds (so also hybrid and cross bred) are sold under a
license that forbids replanting. The license is needed so that the company
or whoever first created the seeds can cover the costs of research and also
earn from their invention. The process of modifying seeds might seem trivial
but is much more complex than you might think.
种子公司要赚钱,如果作物种子能继续使用,就没钱赚了
often, modified seeds are unstable and produce plants that do not
preserve all genes. For this reason, modified seeds are cross bred with the
original variety to sort of stabilise them. Even after this, second
generation seeds could give birth to just the original variety, without the
modification anymore. If the genes are preserved, the seeds are often not as
vigorous as the first generation ones, because of many factors.
转基因种子一般不稳定,第二代就不太灵了,好的特征会消失。有的活力减弱
Apart from this, bought seeds are treated with substances to help them
grow better (nutrients to give higher probability of producing a plant) or
to avoid them getting eaten by birds (bright colours coatings to “scare”
predators).
seeds were being licensed before modern genetic modification came into
play, and farmers had started re buying seeds every year because it was also
less expensive: saved seeds need to be first of all collected, then stored
for some time, and the storage has to be with the right temperature and
humidity, …
Most farmers re buy seeds every year, even organic farmers.
there are concerns about second generation seeds spreading into the
environment and influencing wild varieties.
他们也怕转基因影响其他作物或者野生植物
There were proposals of making GM seeds infertile, so that second generation
seeds would not even exist or be infertile. This solution would have also
saved the need of having to enforce the licensing by checking suspect cases
of seed replanting. However, the patent was bought and never used because
some anti-GMO lobbying groups spread misinformation about the real goal of
the seeds (they suggested that it was just to avoid replanting, and falsely
suggested that most farmers still do it, when it’s not true at all). |
