Art。
It may be asked what was the origin of the Greek temple? It is apparent that
here, as in other forms of Greek art, the Greeks learned and borrowed from
their predecessors. The ground plan was evidently derived from the megaron
of the Mycenaean house, a rectangular hall with a frontal porch supported by
columns. In Egypt the Greeks could see magnificent temples in which columns
played a great part. Fluted columns occur there as early as the Middle
Kingdom. Prototypes for the capitals, both Doric and Ionic, were furnished
by the East-Egypt and Assyria, as well as Crete and Mycenae. The chief
architectural ornaments used by the Greeks-the lotus, guilloche, palmette,
spiral, and rosette-were also taken from the East; as were some of the
architectural mouldings.
