1. 从声卡接3条3.5mm to RCA线到receiver的3个input
2. 直接用optical接到receiver,再让receiver up-mix成5.1声道
solution 1 会有音质的提升吗？

and your player's setting. I have optical to receiver, 5.1 dolby digital and
DTS no problem at all. I do have to change some setting in the player
software.

OR
2. player设置输出为2声道，
optical就只有2声道出来？
我现在player和声卡驱动设置输出是5.1的，不过倒是没有注意raw material是不是2声
道的，难道软件不会upmix？

Yes, exactly.

direct output. Don't choose PCM.
It depends. My receiver can do dolby Prological, basically a upmix,
but the effect is really not that good.

But bottomline is: if the music/movie files are 2.0, it is hopeless?

work, in most of the case, it won't do you any good, my personal experince.
Maybe because my receiver is low end one.
P.S. most of the movies, even from web downloads, they would have 5.1 audio.
the music, unless it's a live recording, most of them are 2.0. But it never
bother me. I listened to mono sometimes. =)

your receiver. but considering even a cheap receiver is likely better than
your sound card, it's best to use 2 channel digital out and set the receiver
for the 5.1 simulated output using Dolby pro logic II. whether it sounds
good or not is entirely your choice. but this is the domain of DSP. most people said it was no good.

i.e., use optical or coaxial to do 2.0 digital output into my receiver and
let the receiver do 5.1 up-mixing.
