flying to Kauai took a wild turn from the first morning flight. due to
mechanical problems, i was put on another flight, to Houston, then LA , then
honolulu then Lihue. racing with time for every connection. baggage didnot
arrive until the next day. but hey, i am finally in Kauai after 7 hours
delay.
at 11 pm, got on the last shuttle to rental car company, driving to the
hostel. without my checkin bag, i went to sleep straight ahead with ocean
sleeping in the background.
woke up the next morning with first sunshine coming in. 5:20 am. got a
better look at the female only dorm. there are 4 other girls in the room.
the room has a huge balcony. i walked out, and there it is, the orange
rising sun just slightly above the ocean horizon with silhouette of palm
trees scattered along the sandy beach, right in front of my eyes, 50 feet
away. . Grabbed my camera, i ran out of the door. watched the sky turned
from pink, red, to white. all in only 30 mins. Walked along the beach , see
people started coming out, jogging, walking. see little almost transparent
crabs on the beach, busy coming out and in to their little holes. they are
so tiny and look so light that i am not if they are moving that fast because
of the wind or by their legs. Feeling hungry, and there, i saw the Kountry
Kitchen , a breakfast place right across the street. i had a thing for
restaurants name with Kitchen, to me, they have real food, cuz they have a
Kitchen!. had a Kalua pig omelet, oh, amazingly big and delicious, stuffed
with pork and spinach . satiated , i walked back to hostel to check out with
leftover for lunch :).
Since My travel partners ( a couple from LA, whom i met from my alaska trip
last year and a girl from Chicago whom i found on mitbbs) were not coming in
until that night, so i went for a little hike. the Sleeping Giant Trail,
right by Kapaa, only 15 mins away from the hostel (Kauai Beach Hostel 30$per
night for dorm).
爬到山上，郁郁葱葱的绿色，一路上鲜红的熟透的果子的味道，掉到地上的。没敢吃，
不认识。后来才知道，那些就是wild strawberry guava. 我走着走着, 看着trail
mile marker,过了1mile，就再没看到，继续向前， 路越来越难走，慢慢已经没有路了
， 一边悬崖，一边靠山，窄窄的，树木长的越来越茂盛，灌木的，手扶的石头，在
bush里面穿出来。想，the trail is listed as moderately difficult, but that
was already very difficult, 看看时间，决定返回。下山一些，看到有另外一条
trail，才知道自己刚才不知道什么走到sidetrail上，刚才并不是真正的trail。返回
到主trail，非常好走的路。 很快到了山顶，能看到岛的东面大部分。下山的时候，竟
然又迷路了。 还好看到一个人带着狗，i told him i am lost. he said, no, this
is the way down. "but this was not the way i came up" i frowned. "did you
come up where the horse patches are ?" "no, but there was a little parking
lot by a water treatment unit" "i know where that is"
我们一起下了山. on our way down, i slipped. with red dirt covered all my
right leg pants as souvenir, we came down. :)
and he gave me a ride back. he went on that hike almost everyday with his
dog. he hikes barefooted. "it is easier to grasp the ground" he said. He
moved over to Kauai and settled down 7 years ago. and loved it. how could
you not?
turned out i was lucky that i got lost coming down. i came down from a
different side of the mountain. Meanwhile on the other side i was supposed
to be on, the rain was pouring down. :)
went to Just live zipline in the afternoon. i was really really scared of
rollercoaster . but scared like me, the ziplines were not thrilled for me at
all. they are nice and long, but not as fast as i thought. which is good
and bad. :). the guides though, are super nice, and even went out and picked
out the guava for me to try after they knew that i missed all those
delicious sweet guavas on my trail.
did a little shopping at walmart for the next two days camping and hiking
food. Kauai has about 35% of japanese population, so walmart has some
Japanese food, sushi roll, bento box stuff. but it doesnot have fresh vegi
and fruits. went to Times grocery, where they also have a COSCO. :). got all
that.
didnot follow my plan for the first day, i went to Lygdate beach park by
Lihue. stayed there till sunsets. i watched the waves, a little boy trying
surfing , his mom watching him closely on shore. i sat there and listened.
listen to the ocean sing.
Finally all of us met, at the airport at 9:20 pm. :) |
