Lenovo laptop would be a good buy for a student to take course notes and
finish homework? I do not care about either the graphic display or the
sound quality. But I need a reliable machine to work in the classroom for
at least three years in a roll.
If lenovo is not good enough, what other machine(s) could be considered?

The first one was bought in 2007 and its battery was dead a month ago.
Waaaaa. And its memory is only 160 MB.
The second one bought in 2010 is mainly used as a display unit for watching
online movies at home.
Therefore, I need a third one for the stated purpose in my original post.

if you are not short of money, just pick T520 or W520.
