("Europe and China are crucial for Nokia because they are two of the last
remaining markets where the company has a leading position. However, its
lead in both markets is crumbling")
My comment:
(a) In a nutshell, Nokia warned yesterday that this coming quarter, its
profit margin in its core cellphone business would be ZERO. owning to
(i) fierce competition from Appla and in particular, Google Android;
(ii) lack of new products till the year end, because it abandoned in
February 2010 its operating system Symbian for Microsoft's Window which ill
not arrive until year end; and
(iii) failure to compete against unbranded cellphones in China and India.
(b) The report mentions "Salo, a town of 55,000 that is considered the
birthplace of Nokia's handset business."

(In 1868, [Fredrik] Idestam built a second [groundwood pulp] mill near the
town of Nokia; In 1979, the merger of Nokia and Salora[another Finnish
company] resulted in the establishment of Mobira Oy. Mobira began developing
mobile phones for the NMT (Nordic Mobile Telephony) network standard, the
first-generation, first fully automatic cellular phone system that went
online in 1981; Nokia operates a total of 9 manufacturing facilities located
at Salo, Finland)

Quote: "The first commercially automated cellular network (the 1G) was
launched in Japan by NTT in 1979, initially in the metropolitan area of
Tokyo. Within five years, the NTT network had been expanded to cover the
whole population of Japan and became the first nationwide 1G network. In
1981, this was followed by the simultaneous launch of the Nordic Mobile
Telephone (NMT) system in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. NMT was the
first mobile phone network featuring international roaming. The first 1G
network launched in the USA was Chicago-based Ameritech in 1983 using the
Motorola DynaTAC mobile phone
