2006 Mercury Mountaineer.
While driving, when I reach 30-40 MPH it has a weird vibration and noise. It
doesn't happen every time. In fact, it may happen and then it won't happen
again for like a day or two. The noise and vibration feeling somewhat
resembles when you drive over those lines on the side of highways/freeways
that make that loud noise.
• Becomes more pronounced by steering
• gets worse as I go faster.
• Not Affected by braking: guess not rotor related problem
• Checked tire balance and wheel alignment: no problem.
Could be
• wheel bearings problem?
• Axle Problems?
• CV joints?
• Driveshaft? |

Jack up a side, shake the tire, does it play (may be w.b. OR control arms)?
Roll the tire, do you hear the noise? Does it roll freely? take off the
tire, check the control arms boots.
4x4? Does the front differential leak?
Park, lift hood, start the car and give it some gas, do you hear the noise?
so you know if it's from engine or suspension.
15 minutes quick check up without tools involved, may give you a better
sense before whatever the mechanics gonna tell you.

Got it jacked up and played with the driver side wheel, where the noise
comes from. Believe it is the wheel bearing problem.
Also did some google search about wheel bearing problem. My problem is very
likely due to the wheel bearing issue.

I did make sure everything the op needs are strictly in a stock mountaineer
, i.e., a car jack and a lug wrench. That's also what you need when you sit
at the shoulder of an Interstate with a flat tire around midnight when its
freezing outside and 100 miles away from any town. Seriously, if any driver
thinks its a "wild" job, please make it the first thing you do tomorrow
morning to learn it. And you are welcome.

and changed it by myself last week. The car runs perfect now.

Did you use a torque wrench on that "axle nut"? I don't remember the right
torque for the front, you need google it. You just don't want to over
tighten it.
If you don't have the wrench, maybe you can tighten the nut all the way then
turn a tiny bit backward. and that's insane to really do that, for the
obvious reason. :]
and actually the brake brackets and calipers need torque down too.
so do it right and use the wrench. i remember harbor freight has cheap ones
for $11 w/ coupon all the time. again, you need google it.
