agent, making him the latest established veteran to go.
"James Farrior has been a rock for the Steelers but the Turk takes no
prisoners — he's gone," Ralph Cindrich wrote on his Twitter account this
morning.
Farrior has been a fixture in the middle of the Steelers' defense since
signing with the team as an unrestricted free agent in 2002. The unit's
unquestioned leader, he has also provided a strong locker room presence
along with wide receiver Hines Ward and defensive end Aaron Smith, whom the
Steelers will also release.
Farrior, who turned 37 in January, had been scheduled to make around 2.8
million this season. Cindrich said Thursday that Farrior is planning to play
in 2012, even if it is not with the Steelers.
A defensive captain for eight consecutive seasons, Farrior started 153
regular-games for the Steelers, including 14 last season.
The two-time Pro Bowler finished fourth on the Steelers with 90 tackles, but
was also spelled by Larry Foote at left inside linebacker in 2011.
The Steelers will save about $4.5 million of salary cap space when they
formally release offensive lineman Chris Kemoeatu and defensive lineman
Aaron Smith. The 2012 cap is projected to be about $120 million. Here is a
