It has been four games for the Cardinals this season without Kurt Warner and
it’s pretty clear that the defending NFC West Champs could use their Hall-
Of-Fame quarterback back. I think everyone knew that a huge void was left
behind when Warner decided to trade in his cleats for dancing shoes, but
things got so bad, so quick that the Cardinals are going with an undrafted
free agent quarterback this weekend.
After Matt Leinart was released, the starting QB job was handed to Derek
Anderson. Unfortunately, DA struggled in the first four games and was far
too erratic. Now the Arizona Cardinals have turned to Arizona native Max
Hall this weekend against New Orleans. It’s certainly not a great team to
start your first NFL game against, but if there is anyone that knows about
what it is like to be an undrafted free agent and make it in the NFL, it’s
Kurt Warner and Hall would be wise to have a chat with Warner before Sunday
’s game.
Kurt Warner joined XTRA 910 in Phoenix with Bickley and MJ to talk about how
he feels he has done on Dancing With the Stars so far, what it is like to
spend so much time rehearsing in an intimate setting, why he decided to be
on the show in the first place, and he gives some advice for Max Hall making
his first NFL start this weekend. (Editor’s note: Kurt Warner is also the
analyst on Fox for this weekend’s Saints/Cardinals game.)
On his dance this past week and how he feels about his performance on
Dancing with the Stars so far:
“I really didn’t feel good about it during the week and it was a long week
. I wasn’t sure what we were going to put out there on Monday, but after
the performance, I felt great about it. I thought we did a great job, I
thought the routine was good, I thought people enjoyed it, and I thought it
was a good performance. I think we’re getting better and better and more
comfortable every week. I think it shows out there and I think people are
really being entertained about what we’re doing.”
On him sending the right message on Dancing with the Stars:
“I think you’re right. I think there’s a lot of different characters on
the show where you can respect your partner, respect your marriage, and you
can respect what you believe in. That was a huge reason why I wanted to do
the show to show people that you can be in an intimate setting like that
with your partner, but you can do it in the right way, in a classy way. I
think people are picking up on that and they appreciate that part of it.
They’re enjoying the chemistry we have and it’s a chemistry based on us
enjoying one another and enjoying the performance and not anything from a
sexual standpoint. I think it’s been good and it’s come across really,
really well with the audience.”
On the advice he would give to Max Hall this weekend if he could talk to him
and whether or not he plans on talking to him:
“I was just thinking about it today. I know I’m gonna talk to him in the
production meeting but maybe just take him aside and let him know, ‘hey a
lot of people are talking when was the last time an undrafted free agent
yada yada yada.’ That was me about 15 years ago. I was that undrafted guy
that nobody knew about and nobody was expecting anything from. There’s a
good side of that and say hey there’s not high expectations and I don’t
have to win games for this team. I have to manage the game and let the
playmakers and veterans around me win the games. I think that’s a huge part
of this process. He can’t try to do too much. He can’t try to be me and
live up to the expectations that we set there the last couple of years. His
job is to go out there and manage it and try to make the plays that are out
there to be made and try not to make any mistakes. I would love to have a
conversation at some point. I don’t know if it will happen before the game
or not with everything on his plate. I would love to just encourage him a
little bit and say this is a process, it’s not going to be perfect, but
just ride the course and do what you feel confident you can do and let the
guys around you win some games for you.”
On how tough it may be this weekend calling the game between his former team
and New Orleans:
“I definitely think so. I think you wanna be as unbiased as you can and
tell the stories of both teams and share what you know. The fact of the
matter is I’m close to a lot of the guys on the Cardinals, I know this team
as well as anybody, but at the same time I wanna tell the story of how the
game plays out and tell the story of the players in the game. I have a lot
of respect for the coaches and players of the Saints. So I think this is a
great game to cover. There are a lot of similarities between the Saints and
some of the team’s that I have played on in the past. Obviously I know a
lot about this Cardinals team, so I don’t foresee this as being a problem,
but you never know because I am very close to a lot of the guys in Arizona.” | z*i
