It is a complicated issue.
(1) some pro sports team is a semi-"public" company even here in US. For
example, NBA 76ers is owned by Comcast, which means 76ers is part of a public
traded company, just like Manchester United is part of public
traded company (Manchester United PLC.)
(2) while it is possible in NBA for a team to be essentially public, it is not
