The purpose of wearing Eye Black is to soften the glare of sunlight or stadium
lights. Players see the ball better when it is up in the air. Studies have
been done to test it's effectiveness: People were exposed to strong light for
a certain amount of time, those wearing eye black showed better eyesight after
the test.
For official information, there was an article on ESPN magazine about 2
monthes ago.
