P*******l 发帖数: 105 | 1 TGIF,but the weather was pretty bad: 43F with strong wind.
Off work around 6:00pm, thought of going home. Then wife called and was
asked to pick up the kids from their swimming practice at 7:30 pm. Suddenly
I had one hour and half to kill.
Turned the steering wheel abruptly and drove to the river bank. No one there!
Took the tie off, put on the dirty fishing jacket and long trousers on top
of the working suit, here I come!
First, I tied a 1/4 oz jig head with a 3 inch chartreuse colored twist tail
on my 7 feet medium action rod, intended for white bass or walleye. However,
the damn wind was very strong and it was very difficult to feel the jig
under the water. Thought there were a couple of light bites about 6 feet
away from the bank likely be crappies, I changed the jig to 1/16 oz with a 2
inch deep green twist tail. Cast another 10 minutes, only had one bite but
missed the fish.
Moved to an area closer to the dam and cast down stream ( even though the
book advised against this way), a strong strike on the 2nd cast. The fish
was certainly felt heavy against the current. Thought had a walleye, I
played the fish with extra caution. It turned out be a medium sized drum.
A other person finally showed up and engaged me into some random
conversations. Then he asked "did you ever catch any Muskie here?" I said "
yah, but only when the water levels were much higher than today's." We
talked more about walleyes and cat fishes since he was interested in them,
then I decided to change a place again.
Come back to the original place I was at, changed the lure to a 3 inch twist
tail again after adding a lead bead to the line. Cast a couple of time at
different angles and distances, no luck! Said to the other guy and myself "
this is going to be my last cast", I cast my lure perpendicular to the bank
and out about 7 feet. While I was pretty absentminded thinking of picking up
the kids, bang, a light strike was felt. I set the hook quickly, but felt
that I could barely pull the fish toward me with the drag set around 10 lbs.
Then I knew I had a big fish on!
Since the hook was tiny and the leader was only 17 lbs FC, I loosed the drag
quickly. The fish did not run, but would not give in either. I had
difficult time to gain ground. After 3 minutes, finally had a glimpse on it.
Oh, my god, a gigantic Muskie! I yelled and the other guy came.
I played the fish carefully for 15 minutes and eventually tire it out. We
measured the fish in the water: it was 49 INCHES! Still, we had problem to
pull the fish on shore. Finally I decided to wet my feet and went into the
water with my shoes on. I grabbed one side of the gills and the jaws with my
left hand, then hold the fish belly with my right hand. Only that way,
could I get the fish off the water.
I gave the fish a bear hug and had a photo taken by the other person. Then
he held the fish and I took a couple of photoes for him. I measured the fish
again to confirm the size of 49 inches, then we let the fish go. Initially
the fish was pretty motionless. After about 7-8 minutes he gradually revived
and swam away from us and we sent him off to the deep water.
Only then the other guy told me he was there this morning and caught a 30
inches Muskie. He showed me the picture of his fish. Both of us felt it was
pretty ironic regarding my comment on water level and Muskie fishing then. | P*******l 发帖数: 105 | | m*****n 发帖数: 1631 | | z**l 发帖数: 1192 | 4 Nice giant! Cold water big fish!
