There are big fish in every pond, even in a small pond.
But I didn't understand it until yesterday I accidentally entered into my
recruiter's webpage.
I applied for a scientist job in his lab last May. No response after I
submitted my application until two months later I got an email from him.
He said in his email that he was sorry for late reponse and would like to
talk with me about this excellent job. The phone interview went well and he
gave me an oral invitation for on-site interview scheduled as one month
later.
but I waited for about two months for the on-site. Eventually I went to the
onsite. Before I left, I asked him when he could make his final decision
about this position. He hesitated for a while and said he would try his best
to make it asap.
No any news for one month. I called him and he answered that he would let me
know once he made it. I expressed a little worry about my deadline in my
lab at that time. He said he couldn't make a decision based on my situation.
Six months later(Yesterday) I accidentally went into his webpage and found
he just recently hir a scientist. The one he hired was graduated from
Harvard University and carried out a five year postdoctoral training in JHU.
He even has his own grants.
I reallized at that moment that there are really big fish in every pond.

it seems to say the big fish is the Harvard graduate or the recruiter in
their small lab (pond).
The big fish here implies that life in a samll place (lab, town)
is as tough as in a big one.
Big fish can not only give you an excitement but also shock you.

still don't get it. The recruiter's lab is too small for a graduate from
Havward? Havard graduate should only go to big labs? Why the dude's life
will be tough? Why the big fish (Harvard dude) will shock you?

it is the big fish staying in a small pond that shocks me.
You can imagine how shad or shrimp could survive in a small pond if there
are a large mouth there.

why is it similar to "how come you want to share gasoline on the trip
to fishing if you can catch a lot of fish?"
What if you don't catch any fish? Does that mean you will stay up overnight
in the hotel?
BTW, don't do this. If you are sharing a room with a man, your company would
think you are a gay. If you are sharing a room with a woman, your company
would think you called a prostitute.
