Recently we interviewed a candidate. He is from a top school with impressive
pedigree. He was asked why he wanted to come to work in our university. He
responded by saying that our university is a "very good" university, among
other things. I thought he was complimenting us by saying our university is
"very good" and didn't make much of it.
One senior faculty got very pissed off with this response. In the post-
interview meeting, he voiced his opinion about the candidate this way, "He
called our university a very good university. Fxxx you."
Um...
Is this an issue of language barrier? Or do we have inferior complex? |

可能很合适的候选人的话，最终还是你们的损失。我觉得这个候选人的回答并没有什么

发帖数: 1096 | 6 I don't know. I don't think many people will be agitated by such a generic
answer, although as you sense, a compliment of "very good" does not mean too
much. The phrase sounds neutral to me---meaning neither superior nor
inferior.
I am not sure if the senior faculty got pissed off because he is self-abased
, or because the candidate flattered in the wrong way. My only take is that
the candidate is not passionate about the place. He may as well choose any "
very good" university and settle there.
Though, I would say, a reasonable employer well acknowledges the demand-
supply balance. Sometimes it is not that easy to get a person both good and
passionate. A colleague once told me that he would keep a student who slacks
off or who confronts him, as long as he sensed that the student is good.
Being open minded with a person not pleasing to you might be rewarding in
the long run. Of course, such an ideal situation does not apply to everyone.
For the case of students, a professor should have some spare money to
afford producing less immediate research outcome. Enough digression.
It is very hard to please everyone. I cannot do that. Even the President
cannot do that. I would rather be cooperative, be stylish, while defending
my own bottom line.

了，她说我爸看不上你，大家都想我找个北方的，或者她还想再读书，过两年再考虑。
这些都是借口，真的理由只能有一个，就是她看不上你。
我们这里不也经常有人问，怎么样据offer不伤感情？大家都建议，说家庭原因，配偶
不同意。所以凡是与找工作有关的悲剧，一定不要把对方的理由当回事。楼主学校既然
不错，这个人又能混到senior的地位，不至于因为一个词就这么大干火。他一定是有别
的原因不爽这个candidate，这个原因不能跟你们说，甚至连他自己都不想承认的。
我现在凡事都抱着这种“观察”的态度，很多面上不合理的东西，稍微留意一下，以后
很多都渐渐想明白了。 |

试者的这句话绝不是这位老教授发怒的原因，肯定有别的你不知道的东西在后面。比如
这个应试者的老板或许跟这位老教授不对付，或者别的哪儿产生了冲突。这位老教授就
借机在这儿爆发出来了。
人大多时候比动物肮脏多了。
