intermediate hire. It could happen for various reasons.
It could happen because the department wants to grow an important area and
there is no one in this area. The department needs someone to make an impact
right away, thus decides a tenure hire. In this case, you just need to
impress the department.
If there are already faculty in your area, they need to become a champion
for you. They need to make a case to the department why a tenure hire is
warranted. It is in this case where the internal champion becomes essential.

感觉是捡漏 -- solid mechanics都被索老师的弟子占领了

想要joint placement，夫妻两个是不同专业，这两个专业都是b-school里的，都是没
有grant没有实验的那种专业。一个人是tenured associate professor，另外一个人是
phd candidate马上就要毕业了。应该采取什么策略？是phd candidate尝试投Ap那个学
校么？还是两个人一起跳比较好？有没有案例？
