A***a 发帖数: 73 | 6 A few suggestions:
1) Seminar. Focus on one or two key research topics and explain down to
details. I have conducted many research projects so for the first few on
sites, I made a mistake by talking a few topics without going deep into
either one of them. I was hoping that they would ask me details during one-
on-one interviews. One of the faculty interviewed me told me that my talk
was too generalized (too high-level). I think for some reason, most of the
faculties like to see equations in slides, lots of them, probably making
them feel that you are doing real science :). I changed my style by
focusing on 1 topic and related it to the other topics at the ends to show
the breath of my research. I presented detailed algorithms, the extensions
and future directions. It seems to be much better received.
2) Research plan. Focus on connections/projects/research you have now and
collaborations/research topics you have in mind for the future. If you have
10 years of industry background, the department will expect you to bring in
funds in a relatively short period of time after you get started. You need
to clearly outline what your past funding sources are, how would you
maintain the funding once you started in the university. You would like to
make sure those points are delivered: a) You are highly competitive in terms
of attracting funds. your past funding history supports that claim. b) you
will continue have those funding even after you give up your current
position. Your funding agency isn't going to stop funding your research if
you change companies. Or you write good proposals that make you competitive
for applying for the NSF funds or industry funds. c) You know who you can
collaborate in the department. Pick a few professors you have in mind and
related their work with your research directions and let them know that you
can work together on applying what sources of funding. d) I would first
think carefully the future research directions as you do not want to overlap
much with the ones the current faculties are already working on. You want
to find your niche now so that you are not a threat to the others. You want
to establish a new area in the department very quickly and that area is
going to strengthen the big picture for the department.
Once you get an on site, you beat most of the other candidates. The rest of
it is personality (whether or not you are a pleasant people to work with)
and communication skills (whether or not you can be a good educator and a
good salesman for your ideas). Of course, you need to be prepared to answer
tough questions to show that you have done what you claimed you have done.
I found the interviews very intense and interesting. I had a good job and I
was by no means desperate for the faculty job so I was more relaxed than
most candidates I guess. That makes a difference too - a desperate candidate
is not what an interviewer wants to see. They want to get the best
candidate out there who wants the job because he loves it - not someone who
needs the job for a living.
best of luck.
